Researching language-focused study abroad through an equity lens
Study abroad (SA) has long been regarded as a key component of internationalization efforts in higher education and much scholarship has investigated the practices and outcomes of SA from varied perspectives. More recently, scholars have paid growing attention to ways to increase the participation of historically marginalized students in SA, to design SA programs to meet those students’ needs, and to document their experiences abroad. Despite rec…
That Was a Good One
Recent research on second or additional language (L2) pragmatics instruction in study abroad has incorporated the technique of encouraging students to gather data about pragmatics, for example, by asking members of the host country to complete questionnaires, practice using pragmatic features, or answer questions about pragmatics (e.g., Hernández, 2021; Mir, 2021). Such studies have reported positive learning outcomes of pedagogical interventions…
Pragmatic Development in Study‐Abroad Contexts
Study abroad offers second language (L2) speakers the opportunity to employ the L2 in a wide range of settings, for various purposes, and with different interlocutors. Through participation in everyday activities that involve the L2, study‐abroad students can be exposed to the pragmatic practices of the host community which, in turn, can facilitate L2 pragmatic development. Therefore, study abroad would appear to be an ideal context for pragmatic…

Developing interactional competence during study abroad
Out-of-class interaction during study abroad
This study provides an in-depth examination of the opportunities for social interaction and second language (L2) use in service encounters recorded in situ by study abroad students in Toledo, Spain. The participants in the study were seven university students from the U.S. who recorded 113 naturally-occurring service encounters over the course of one semester studying abroad. An analysis of the corpus and of students’ journals and interviews indi…
L2 pragmatic development in study abroad
From the Virtual World to the Real World
With its focus on the use of language forms in cultural context, the study of pragmatics can be a valuable component in a program that prepares students to learn both language and culture in study abroad. The goal of the present study is to propose a model for pragmatic instruction in study abroad that fosters both intercultural competence and language skills, is informed by research and practice, and takes advantage of the affordances that an im…
Development of Spanish requests and apologies during study abroad
The present study analyzed the requests and apologies of 67 U.S. American study abroad students before and after spending one semester in a Spanish-speaking country. Ratings of students' pragmatic appropriateness by Spanish native speakers indicated that, overall, students improved their request and apology performance over the course of the semester. An analysis of students' request and apology strategy use, both pre- and post-study abroad, foun…
Acquisition of Requests and Apologies in Spanish and French
The primary aim of this study was to assess the impact of a curricular intervention on study‐abroad students’ use of language‐ and culture‐learning strategies and on their acquisition of requests and apologies. The intervention consisted of a brief face‐to‐face orientation to learning speech acts, a self‐study guidebook on language and culture strategies, which included strategies for learning speech acts, and electronic journaling by the student…
