The British General Election of 1935

Historians have so far been in disarray over the British general election held in 1935. On the part played by rearmament in the National Government's campaign two eminent scholars held diametrically opposed views in the immediate post-war years, while another thought that the Government emphasized collective security, in the form of League of Nations sanctions against Italy for her invasion of Ethiopia, at the expense of rearmament.1 One scholar maintained that the Prime Minister, Stanley Baldwin, had sought a mandate for increased armaments expenditure, and was answered by another who wrote that the Government's economic record
