Germany has produced many famous and many infamous men in her turbulent history, several of whom were forced, through a variety of circumstances, to lead a life of exile and eventually to die in countries far from the Fatherland. One such man, and incidentally one who has yet to find his biographer,l was Max Bauer. An undoubted expert in military matters, Bauer was an inveterate dabbler in politics, and it was this which forced him into exile after the Kapp Putsch in Germany in March I920. After a brief visit to Germany he was to meet his end in China in 1929. Bauer's connection with that country lasted from 1927 to 1929, during which time he became Chiang Kai-shek's military and economic adviser, with emphasis on the former field of activity.
