When a language is more than a language In the I958 referendum, out of the twelve French colonies in tropical Africa, eleven chose to remain associated with the new Fifth de Gaulle's Republic, within the frame of the Communaute. By the end of I960 all of them had become independent, the Communaute was quietly fading out, and the relations between France and her former African territories were, on the whole, far better than in I958, with a de Gaulle achieving the status of an African statesman
