A Rational Equation of the Learning Curve Based on Thorndike's Law of Effect

Click to increase image sizeClick to decrease image size Résumé On donne en forme mathématique certaines propositions contenues dans la Loi de l'Effet de Thorndike, et l'on montre que l'on peut obtenir les mêmes fonctions en généralisant la théorie de l'apprentissage récemment donnée par Thurstone. On développe de ces fonctions une équation de la courbe d'apprentissage laquelle donne la relation entre les erreurs cumulatives et les réponses correctes cumulatives. Cette équation est plus générale que la Loi de l'Effet de Thorndike parce que la formulation mathématique ne dit pas ce qui fait entrer et ce qui fait sortir, mais seulement qu'il y a deux processus de cette nature, et que chacun procède à sa propre vitesse constante. Donc, la formulation que voici peut s'appliquer à des theorie qui sont à quelques égards très différentes de la théorie de Thorndike. Cette équation s'adapte aux données pour la discrimination visuelle chez les rats. On suggère l'emploi de la pente de la courbe d'apprentissage au point où l'exercice a cessé comme critère plus satisfaisant du "degré d'apprentissage" atteint par l'individu, que n'importe lequels des critères maintenant employés. Au moyen des paramètres de cette équation, il est possible de distinguer analytiquement entre le rendement initial et la capacité d'apprendre d'un seul sujet dans une tâche donnée. On discute la valeur de cette distinction pour la résolution de différents problèmes psychologiques. Referat Gewisse Behauptungen, welche in Thorndikes Gesetz der Wirkung (law of effect) enthalten sind, werden in mathematischer Form gegeben, und es wird gezeigt, dass dieselben Funktionen durch Verallgemeinerung der Lerntheorie, die neulich von Thurstone aufgestellt worden ist, abgeleitet werden können. Aus diesen Funktionen wird eine Gleichung der Lernkurve, welche die Beziehungen zwischen anhäufenden Fehlern und anhäufenden richtigen Antworten angibt, abgeleitet. Diese Gleichung ist allgemeiner als Thorndikes Gesetz der Wirkung, weil die mathematische Formulierung nicht angibt, was eingeprägt oder verlernt wird, sondern bloss dass es zwei solche Vorgänge gibt, und dass sie zu ihrer eigenen beständigen Schnelligkeit ablaufen. Daher dürfte diese Formulierung auf Theorien angewendet werden, die gewissermassen verschieden von Thorndikes Theorie sind. Diese Gleichung eignet sich für Daten der visuellen Unterscheidung bei Ratten. Der Gebrauch der Neigung der Lernkurve, wo Uebung aufhörte, wird als ein besseres Kennzeichen des Grades des Lernens, den ein Individuum erreicht, als irgendein anderes Kennzeichen, das jetzt gebraucht wird, vorgeschlagen. Vermittellst der Parameter dieser Gleichung ist es möglich, zwischen Anfangsfähigkeit und Lernfähigkeit des einzelnen bei einer gegebenen Aufgabe analytisch zu unterscheiden.
