OPULAR CULTURE IS MORE THAN JUST ENTERTAINMENT.IT REFLECTS the society in which it was created, and it has the ability to expose the untruths and absurdities that support powerful figures and institutions within that society.For example, throughout the presidency of George W. Bush, poll after poll of public opinion revealed a deep mistrust among African-Americans of the Bush administration and of the war in Iraq.Pundits and politicians alike often struggled to understand the source of this suspicion.The early 2000s was a time in American history where anything less than full and uncritical support of Bush's war on terror was often seen and portrayed in the media as tantamount to sedition.As many stood befuddled over black America's contempt for Bush's policies, black popular culture, as it has often done throughout American history, provided its own counterpoint to this discourse.Much of the opposition in this case took the form of comedy and was laced with a large dose of insightful irreverence.Nancy Levi Arnez and Clara B. Anthony have argued that African-American humor since its inception has been marked by the idea of "laughing to keep from crying" and is thus distinguishable from humor in other cultural or racial contexts (339).They write, "Although laughter is a human universal, its wellsprings are not.What people find funny or humorous is a reflection of their culture, just as much as their clothing, religion, or language" (Arnez and Anthony 339).Since the days of slavery, black humor has been used "as a psychological leverage for the sake of their sanity," or in other words, as a survival strategy.It has been used to cope with the Jason Jordan
