Often neglected in mobility historiography is pedestrianism. One of the most decisive moments in the history of walking in the urban context, namely, the dawn of transport motorization, is the focus of this research article. During the first three decades of the twentieth century it is shown by several sources associated with pedestrianism in Santiago, Chile that the nature of pedestrianism was deliberately steered from a natural and unquestionable right of city inhabitants to a position of pedestrian responsibility and conscientiousness. While motorized mobility was being linked to rationality, efficiency, productivity and modernization towards the end of this period, pedestrianism was increasingly associated with irrationality, insurgency, unpredictability and temerity. Pedestrians were gradually blamed for obstructing urban modernization, even though they began as victims of motorization
