The concept of diffusion

One of the important processes recognized in recent years and researched by geographers is the process of diffusion. This is the spread in time and space of a particular phenomenon. Diffusion was discerned in various phenomena such as technical innovation in the classical technical areas such as television [Mackinson 1974, Brown 1974] as well as in agricultural innovations in underdeveloped areas [Garst 1974]. Research on diffusion is widespread also in historical geography, exemplified in the spread of riots in the Ukraine (Cox and Demko 1967) or the spread of disease such as cholera in the U.S.A. during the 19th century. Diffusion research has advanced to such a degree that initial theories have already been formulated on the manner of expansion in space and time and they aid in the analysis of processes in additional areas. The purpose of this article is to examine the diffusion of the cooperative concept in agriculture in the non-Jewish villages in Israel. The subject's uniqueness lies in the fact that in Arab villages and society the cooperative agriculture concept failed to take root while, at the same time, it was spreading in adjacent Jewish communities. At the present, the cooperative concept is fairly widespread, predominating in 96 per cent of all Jewish farming (moshav and kibbutz) units. Only after direct contact between the two communities, primarily following the establishment of the State of Israel, did the diffusion concept become widespread in non-Jewish villages [Bar-Gal 1973]. What is the direction which this diffusion takes and which factors influenced it -these are the main questions Which will be dealt with
