Societal neglect and violence towards children

What do these phenomena tell us about ourselves?∗

There has been significant media coverage of violence by children towards other children. This article argues that such violence can be understood in the context of societal neglect and mistreatment of children. The interplay between the political economy, moral economy, and a public discourse that scapegoats and denigrates vulnerable people is examined. Ten ways that children are being neglected and harmed by society are described. The author challenges the view that social casualties are an inevitable cost of maintaining a free market economy. In concluding, he makes a number of policy recommendations on behalf of children and families, and advocates for a more reasoned, compassionate public discourse in considering how society can best address children's needs
