The King, the Ball and the Maize. The three carved markers of ball court IIb at Copán, a Classic maya site in Honduras, describe the cosmic drama played during each game. The victory of the vital forces of the universe (which the king incarnated) over those of death, enabled the ball (symbol of the sun) to leave the underworld and light the heavens, and the earth to bear fruit, especially maize. This interpretation corresponds closely to the significance of the game as documented in the Popol Vuh
