Remembering Sa-I-Gu

It was right after my 3:00 p.m. on April 29, 1992. I had just come back to my office from the inauguration ceremony of Bob Suzuki, who became the first Asian American President of California Polytechnic University, Pomona. I was scheduled to be in Koreatown later to give a take with Angela Oh to young Jewish leaders on the state “State of Relations between Korean American Merchants and African American Residents” at the Woo Rae Oak restaurant at 6:00 p.m. Before I headed toward Koreatown around 4 p.m., I called Radio Korea to warn Korean American listeners of possible violence in African American neighborhoods in response to the “not guilty verdict.” Yet I never anticipated that violence would spread so quickly into the Koreatown area
