Catherine Keller, professor of constructive theology at Drew University, has crafted a tellingly cryptic book that challenges not merely the reader's intellect but also the validity of any forms of knowing that claim achievable certitude. Heeding Nicholas of Cusa's fifteenth-century exhortation for docta ignorantia, or “knowing ignorance” (17), Cloud of the Impossible (the title is derived from a phrase in Cusa's De vision Dei) serves to underscore the salience, when it comes to current global ferment involving dilemmas of public governance and mutual coexistence, of humbly knowing that we do not know.
