After 1945 Nietzsche lost standing in Germany. Initially, his fragmentary work seemed unsuited for the clearing of the rubble; afterward, his radical views offered little help for the construction of a moderate state. Even stronger was the suspicion (unfounded) that Nietzsche had engendered fascism. Many would have liked to summon the philosopher to Nuremberg to bear the responsibility they were attempting to escape. He was judged guilty through the actions of those who had appropriated him. The harshest condemnation of Nietzsche has come from the orthodox Marxists' tribunal: they regard him as nothing less than the pre-fascist assassin of reason. Even Lukacs has been unable to provide a better judgment
