“Betrayed or avenged, sadness is the condition of the King.”1 This typically lapidary formulation is Gillian Rose's attempt to sum up why philosophy is risky, unavoidable, and comic; and in this brief reflection on her work, I hope to draw out why all these adjectives might be argued to belong to the labor of philosophy. Rose is writing about the apparently tragic tension at the heart of the Arthurian legend.
