The sociological literature on teach ing and learning includes a number of dis cussions devoted to the importance of multi cultural education (Lucal 1996; Martin 1996; Moremen 1997). Much of this litera ture encourages educators to revise the cur riculum and shows how the experience of multicultural education can stimulate stu dents' sociological imaginations (Thompson and Tyagi 1993). Beyond its role within the discipline, multicultural education is fre quently cited as a primary objective of lib eral arts and general education programs, placing sociology squarely in the realm of responsibility for fostering multicultural knowledge. To this end, some scholars have focused on transforming the curriculum as a whole, while others have hoped to improve it through the development of specific activi ties to promote multicultural awareness.
