Development of the Graphic Social Network Measure

The Graphic Social Network Measure (GSNM) adds a new dimension to measuring egocentric networks by utilizing a computer to transform a person's subjective impressions of his or her regular relationships into a graphic display of the structure. A twenty-three question multidimensional instrument measures three social network dimensions: relationship depth, conflict, and perceived contact. Convergent validity, divergent validity, and reliability of the GSNM was evaluated. The sample of 129 adults included fifty-six individuals from a psychiatric clinic, fifty college housing employees, and twenty-three graduate students. Results supported the validity and reliability of the GSNM for further use in research, assessment, and network intervention planning
