Coalition politics

This article provides a case study of the contemporary nature of organizational coalitions for political purposes. It focuses on one organization's—the American Association of University Women—efforts to secure ratification of the equal rights amendment by the state legislature in Illinois through concerted efforts in a central project composed of other diversified groups and organizations. The analysis includes a general overview of the nature and problems of coalitions, an historical perspective of the AAUW and the ERA and the use of organizational resources to achieve a common goal. It concludes by offering some suggestions for future organizational cooperative efforts
