In the first chapter of Homer's Iliad, an angry Apollo rains down a plague upon the Greeks to avenge the mistreated daughter of one of his favorite priests.Infectious disease has always been the stuff of great narratives that accompany it-Thucydides' History (ca.430-400 BCE, excerpted in the June issue of this journal), the introduction to Boccaccio's Decameron (1348-1353), Pepys' Diary (1664), Defoe's Journal of the Plague Year (1722), Poe's Masque of the Red Death (1842), and Camus' La Peste (1947).While it would be difficult to describe this book as a great narrative, it is informative, engaging, and has many strong points.It is comprehensive, running from the viral to the global scales through the biological and social dimensions, with the medical, the clinical, and the pharmaceutical along the way.It is comparative between countries, disease causes, and disease outbreak episodes.It is historical; yet the vigorous closing chapters are confidently forwardlooking.All the predictions are at least credible at the moment, even if some prove eventually to have been off the mark.While focused on the United States, the volume does not neglect the rest of the world and pays close attention, warranted because that nation may emerge better off than most, to China.It contains the human interest and up-close-and-personal stories required for the upscale trade market and might tempt the professoriate (so long as tenured) to write for the common scientific reader.The research apparatus, while not exhaustive, is fit for purpose.The author has good credentials, being at the same time a physician and sociologist and directing a Yale University research center studying network phenomena
