Given these dynamics, it is not surprising that the politics of the nation became the politics of the core. Insofar as presidential residence serves as a barometer of regional power, the core prevailed. All fifteen of the elected presidents between 1861 and 1924 resided in core states, and all but Herbert Hoover did so until 1964-some six score years after the closing of the frontier and the involutional u-turn of American society. Since then the South and West have risen again, all of which seems a fitting context for their renascent, if sometimes blindered, historiographies.38
