Research Article| October 01 2016 When Blackness Stings: African and Afro-Caribbean Immigrants, Race, and Racism in Late Twentieth-Century America Violet Showers Johnson Violet Showers Johnson Violet Showers Johnson is Professor of History and the director of the Africana Studies Program at Texas A&M University, where she teaches courses on the African diaspora and on methods of inquiry into Africana studies. Her research focuses on the experiences of African-descended immigrants in the United States within the context of the wider African diaspora. She is the author of The Other Black Bostonians: West Indians in Boston, 1900–1950 (Indiana University Press, 2006) and co-author, with Marilyn Halter, of African & American: West Africans in Post-Civil Rights America (NYU Press, 2014). She is currently completing a monograph with the working title “When Blackness Stings: African, Afro-Caribbean Immigrants, and Race and Racism in Late Twentieth-Century America.” She is also the current president of the Collegium for African American Research.
