Entre le courage et la peur

L’article analyse la prise de décision à l’assemblée athénienne à partir de quelques remarques de Thucydide. L’auteur signale l’importance accordée au courage comme une condition subjective du peuple inhérente à la délibération selon le vocabulaire utilisé, ce qui implique de considérer des éléments à la fois rationnels et émotionnels dans la configuration des discours persuasifs ainsi que dans l’interaction entre les orateurs et le public. Sur cette base, le rôle actif des citoyens à l’assemblée est considéré en le comparant à la performance des spectateurs au théâtre. Enfin, les effets de la disparition du courage et de son remplacement par la peur sur la pensée à l’assemblée sont étudiés à partir de ce dont témoigne Thucydide concernant le coup d’État oligarchique de 411
