Eighteen plates of physicians have so far been discovered in the provinces of Germania. One text proceed from a big rural market-town, the others from towns or from garrisons of the limes. All of these were worded in Latin. Seventeen, perhaps nineteen physicians were men, one a woman. The most ancient ones date from the first half of the first century AD whilst the most recent is from the 4th or the 5th century AD. These physicians were given a fairly usual denomination, which points to a servile origin, in more than two cases out of three, in their near to distant past. All were « general practitioners » who praticed privately or like physicians of a military unit
