The Purpose of Rafter Holes

In Framed Buildings of England R. T. Mason wrote about what he called 'problem holes' in raftersl• In Vernacular Architecture NO.5 (1974) F. W. B. Charles contributed to the discussion2, in NO.8 (1977) K. W. E. Gravett returned to the subject3, and both referred to the views ofE. W. Parkin. These are holes which are sometimes found in the sides of rafters, usually bored only part-way through, a few inches above the wall-plate. Their purpose is not understood but some theories have been advanced to account for them
