The overwhelming evidence for earthfast framed structures in late-seventeenth- and early-eighteenth-century Maryland and Virginia and the almost total lack of archaeological evidence for log construction has persuaded scholars to assume that the latter was introduced into the region only as part of a much later secondary wave of diffusion. Documentary evidence, however, indicates that log building had appeared in the Chesapeake by the end of the seventeenth century and had become common in the tidewater areas by the middle of the eighteenth. This paper explores the evidence and reasons for its adaptation in this part of British America
