Reinterpreting the Black Power Movement

Over the past two years I have had the opportunity to give over one hundred and fifty lectures and write a book about the Black Power movement. In almost all instances I was struck by how much mystery and mythology continues to surround this era. Baby Boomers who have attended my lectures recalled the period with a poignant mixture of fondness and revulsion, while ex-activists seemed both happy that the story was being told through fresh eyes and wary that a scholarly perspective would miss the subtler dimensions of a period that was as personal as it was political. Younger people, many born after Black Power's heyday, were familiar with the movement's iconography, especially imagery connected with the Black Panthers. The question and answer sessions invariably proved to be the richest parts of such talks and I am always peppered with queries, from both young and old, that express
