This paper describes an approach to addressing men in couples therapy based on cybernetic explanation and social constructivism. The approach is designed to validate men's experience of themselves as men while also challenging the cultural prescriptions for masculinity that men have traditionally embraced. It is argued that contemporary challenges to masculinity that devalue men's experience as men serve only to invert the hierarchy of "acceptable" ideas, but do not facilitate an escape from traditional gender practices. Central to our model is the premise that male gender be considered not in terms of differences between men and women, but in terms of how it is constituted through ideas, beliefs, and cultural practices that specify ideal forms of masculinity
