Medieval examples of syphilis from European Russia

This report is concerned with two adult skeletons from an urban cemetery, dated to the middle of the 16th century, of Rostov Velikiy (Russian Federation), which exemplify specific changes for syphilis. Case No. 1 is a mature adult male. Remains are well-preserved and fairly complete. The frontal bone, forearms and tibia were involved in the infection process. The location of periostal thickening of long bones, visible in the macroscopic view as well as in an X-ray one, focal superficial cavitation on the right frontal, left humerus and ulna can be regarded as a veneral syphilis. Case No. 2 is an adult person. Only low extremities are present in the skeleton. The spaciously thickened tibiae and fibulae, with massive periostitis and proliferative bone formation, have more in common with the infection process. In this case, a treponematosis is the likely reason for the proliferative bone reaction of low extremities. The new data increased the numbers of known pathological samples in the north of Eastern Europe, existing in eastern direction. Copyright © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd
