Toward a More Careful Future

As a manifesto, this book is superb. In often electrifying language, it condemns the growing carelessness of global neoliberalism and its efforts to appropriate the rhetoric of care. I agree with so many of the Care Collective’s claims: “Neoliberalism ... has neither an effective practice of, nor a vocabulary for care” (4) and “the inherently careless practice of ‘growing’ the economy has taken priority over ensuring the well-being of citizens” (8). The Collective also reaches well beyond a class-centric perspective to embrace a “feminist, queer, antiracist and ecosocialist perspective” (22). I love the book’s enthusiasm for the solidarity economy—the many decentralized efforts to develop more cooperative and egalitarian economic institutions. I especially love a quoted line from the poet Dinos Chriastianopoulos: “What didn’t you do to bury me/But you forgot that I was a seed” (81).
