To characterize the discourse competence of second language (L2) Spanish speakers, we examine the narrative and expository texts produced by Korean and Moroccan Arabic learners of Spanish considering (1) whether the discourse connectivity patterns and the detachment devices used by these learners can be compared with those observed in the L1; and (2) whether non-native patterns are determined by L2 proficiency level. Results show that the use of different types of connectivity and detachment devices are not related with L2 proficiency level. From very early on, Spanish L2 learners are capable of adapting to the requirements imposed by communicative circumstances: they all produce well-organized texts and are capable of taking a stance when describing specific events. Keywords: L2 Spanishdiscourse competencediscourse genremodality of productiontext connectivitydetached stancePalabras clave: español L2competencia discursivagénero discursivomodalidad discursivaconectividad textualperspectiva distanciada Acknowledgements / AgradecimientosThe three authors of this paper are members of the Grupo de Investigación para el Estudio del Repertorio Lingüístico (GRERLI) (Research Group for the Study of Linguistic Repertoire) funded by the Generalitat de Catalunya (ref. 2009-SGR-555). The studies which we are referring to have their origin in the international project funded by the Spencer Foundation (USA) Developing literacy in different contexts and in different languages (IP: Ruth A. Berman, from the University of Tel-Aviv); coordinated by Liliana Tolchinsky, the L1 Spanish corpus was compiled within this framework.2. All analyses were performed on mean proportions of each level on the total number of clause packages produced by each subject for each text.3. All analyses were performed on mean proportions of each device type on the total number of clauses produced by each subject for each text, except those in Figure 4.1.
