The Employment Dilemmas of Women during Economic Transformation

Hong Kong was returned to China on 1 July 1997 and became a Special Administrative Region of the Peoples Republic of China. For the past hundred and fifty years Hong Kong has had a capitalist system and presumably would anticipate change after becoming part of a socialist country. However in the light of the policy of One Country Two Systems its political and economic structure is expected to remain unchanged for the next fifty years. The reunification of Hong Kong and Mainland China has reinforced Chinas open door policy leading to more interaction and exchange between Hong Kong and other cities in the Mainland particularly those in adjacent regions such as the Pearl River Delta. Many businessmen have increased their investment in China and moved their factories to the Mainland to take advantage of the lower land and labor costs. As a result many factory workers in Hong Kong have lost their jobs. (authors)
