In the 1930s, Vittorio Mussolini, the Duce's eldest son, did not dedicate himself to politics. Instead he choose to follow is passion for movies and he began a career as a producer that took him to Hollywood. After trying in vain to collaborate with Hollywood's major film studios, the Duce's son assumed the role of editor of the review Cinema, a publication that forged the post-war neorealism. Then, in 1939, he brought Jean Renoir to Italy to shoot the film Tosca. Finally, in 1941, Vittorio contributed to the formation of Roberto Rossellini producing his aviation film, Un pilota ritorna. Paradoxically, in the shadow of the Duce himself and of his son, there was development of a ‘space of freedom’ that allowed the subversive movement of neorealism to be born within the context of a totalitarian regime. This apparent contradiction was the product of the totalitarian capacity of fascism to establish a hegemonic control over culture to encourage the participation of a heterogeneous group of intellectuals
