The Lowdown on the Down Low
Why Some Bisexually Active Men Choose to Self-Identify as Straight

This study focuses on why these men who are behaviorally bisexual do not identify as gay or bisexual. Interviews with 33 African American men were conducted to further understanding of why these men choose to identify as straight. Participants typically defined gay in ways that excluded them, for example, gay is feminine; or playing the receptive role in sex; or dealing exclusively with the same sex. Surveys indicate that some men who identify as straight have sex with men “on the down low.” They did not choose bisexual identity because it was insufficiently distinguished from gay identity. This study probes what they mean when they identify as down low and argues that the erasure of bisexuality and the stigmatization of bisexuality, along with the lumping of bisexual identity with gay identity all contribute to a condition wherein men who are bisexually active are likely to hide their same-sex behavior and choose to identify as straight, even if it is an uneasy fit
