a) Purpose: The purpose of this study is to examine bisexuality stigma, stereotype implementation, and stereotype beliefs connected to bisexuality. More specifically, the purpose is to see whether exposure to a vignette describing a bisexual target on a date will elicit more biphobia, on average, compared to straight, gay, and lesbian targets, and whether differences will emerge between female and male targets. b) Research Questions: Does a bisexual target elicit bisexuality stereotypes compared with targets of other sexual orientations? Does a bisexual female target elicit different stereotype beliefs compared to a bisexual male target? c) Brief Abstract: In this study, we will investigate bisexuality stigma, stereotype implementation, and stereotype beliefs connected to bisexuality. Participants will participate in one experimental session lasting approximately 30 minutes. During that session, participants will read a vignette describing a couple on a date. At the end of the vignette, the participant will read that the couple decided to stop seeing each other about a week after the date. Then, the participant will complete assessments measuring social stigma toward the target (Social Distance Scale), stereotype belief about the target (Attitudes Regarding Bisexuality Scale-Female/Male), and general biphobia (Hudson/Ricketts Index of Attitudes Toward Homosexuals(IAH)). After these assessments, the participant will complete a measure of previous exposure to bisexuality. Finally, the participant will report a demographic questionnaire. Both the IAH (originally used for attitudes toward gay/lesbian people) and measure of previous exposure (originally used for exposure to people with a mental illness) will have their language adjusted in order to address bisexuality and bisexual individuals. d) Rationale: The proposed study will add to the literature by providing an updated report of biphobia among straight, gay, and lesbian populations. Although there have been other studies examining biphobia, many were done over a decade ago. It will benefit the literature to have a report on biphobia in the general population today. In our study, the commitment level of the couple will be ambiguous. In other words, we will not reveal how long the couple has been together nor a label describing their commitment level (i.e. dating vs. exclusive). In this way, we can test for certain stereotypes that other studies were not able to test for, such as lack of commitment and promiscuousness. Finally, the sexuality of the non-target in the couple will be ambiguous to keep attention and results of the assessments on the target of the vignette. This study may provide evidence of the degree to which biphobia still exists in the university population today. It also will assess the current degree of stereotype implementation, as well as any gender differences in bisexuality bias
