Characteristics of Effective Sexual and Reproductive Health Programs for Latine Teens and their Families in the United States

Introduction Sexual and reproductive health (SRH) interventions have demonstrated effectiveness among Latine youth, but less is known about the content and delivery features of effective programs. This scoping review aimed to identify characteristics of effective SRH programs for Latine teens and their families in the U.S. to inform the adaptation of the Floreciendo SRH program. Methods Records were searched since 2002 in Pubmed, Embase, and PsychInfo. Eligible studies enrolled participants aged 10–24 years (≥ 50% Latine and including females), used an experimental or quasi-experimental design, and showed effectiveness on at least one SRH outcome. Curriculum content and program delivery characteristics were extracted and synthesized. Results 4,974 records and 194 full texts were screened, resulting in 19 included studies reporting on 12 programs. No single content area was covered in every program. The most common content addressed STIs/HIV, condoms, and sexual risk behavior (67%, respectively) and Latine cultural norms (75%). Over half focused on Latines (58%). A quarter targeted females (25%), and no mother-daughter programs were identified. Discussion Programs varied notably in content and delivery characteristics. Findings directly informed the adaptation of the Floreciendo SRH program and can guide future SRH programs’ curriculum design and planning to strengthen effectiveness. Policy Implications This review synthesizes the intervention content and delivery characteristics of effective SRH interventions with majority Latine participants. Findings can inform intervention development, funding allocation, and implementation to strengthen effectiveness. Gaps in reporting on interventions should be addressed. Findings can further inform school and community policy development to address the SRH needs of Latine teens
