In this essay, I examine first the emergence of poststructuralist theory in France in the 1960s and discuss the critical and philosophical innovations of the major poststructuralists. Secondly, I investigate the reception of poststructuralist theory by literary critics in general and Anglo‐Saxonists in particular. Thirdly, I review and summarize readings of ‘Beowulf’ informed by poststructuralist theory. Finally, I suggest ways in which poststructuralist thought can continue to inform productively the study of Anglo‐Saxon literary culture
