This article seeks to re-evaluate the prominent place accorded to Germany and England's 1966 World Cup Final victory over West Germany in the English football imagination. It argues against recent approaches in international relations, sports sociology and comparative/regional studies, which place too much initial emphasis on the political and apparent xenophobic aspects of the relationship and moves away from Orwell's and Hobsbawm's famous dicta about sport and national identity. Using a combination of historical analysis, literary tropes and key eye-witness interviews, it replaces the notion of myth with an interpretative model in which humour masks and underpins the deep-lying trauma of the 1966 victory
