The Ethics of Care and Control Dilemmas in Mental Health

This paper provides a reflective account of a series of ethical dilemmas encountered throughout my first social work practice placement, which lasted three months. The ethical dilemmas encountered are centred on issues of care and control within the realm of mental health. All issues are discussed subjectively from my own value base. A critical analysis of the modern-day social and political climate that surrounds social work practice and the legal and policy context, which underpin it, is also included in the discussion. The discussion centres on practice legislated within the Scottish context, where there are devolved powers for health and social care from UK counterparts. The placement was within a residential care setting for adults with severe and enduring mental health issues, all of whom had a diagnosis of schizophrenia. The service was delivered under the auspices of a large voluntary organisation. Throughout this paper, I refer to the organisation as ‘A’
