This article studies the role of self-reference in the written communication of Russian online daters from an interactional perspective, clarifying the impact of various self-referential (ludic) components upon the first stages of online relationships. Many aspects of online daters' communication are oriented towards self-referential playing. These aspects are consumption of information, commodification, recreation, partitioned temporality, fascination with surface, projecting a possible future, auto-reflexivity, cyber-flirting and humour. All of them are embedded in the postmodern socio-cultural context that maintains the key role of play in this type of computer-mediated communication. The complex of numerous ludic elements in online communication shapes the superficial relationships of online daters and inclines them towards ambiguous and low metacommunication
