Chris Crocker and the becoming of a transindividual porn star

This article traces the various media incarnations of YouTube celebrity Chris Crocker as he traverses through the platforms of social media, music, documentary, and pornography. By utilizing Gilbert Simondon’s notion of the transindividual, I conceive of Crocker as a multimedia subject who is actively developing a new media aesthetic that infuses elements of his various media identities into every new platform that he ventures into. The primary attribute of the transindividual is conceiving of identity in relation to one’s social assemblage, instead of relying on the uniform narratives created around identity politics. I also explore how Crocker’s transindividual aesthetic complements his transgender self-identification. By incorporating elements of Crocker’s transmedia persona into his pornographic work, I argue that he is actively developing a model for what a transindividual ‘porn star’ in the internet age looks like
