More than vanilla sex
Reading gay post-pornography with affect theory and psychoanalysis

New regimes of representation in the realcore of Porn 2.0 seem to operate beyond psychoanalytic accounts of subjectivity and desire. ‘Fantasy’ and ‘identification’ do not quite capture the forms of attachment emerging out of these new post-pornographic cultures. Their temporalities and binding forces appear to be too ephemeral in order to produce the psychoanalytic subject through pornographic interpellation. But does that mean we are now living within a post-psychoanalytic pornographic universe? Is our sexuality currently shaped by forces that make any account of the dynamics detected by psychoanalysis obsolete? The first part of this article will look at the Dutch transnational fanzine Butt as an example of gay post-pornography within the past 15 years that operates affectively as well as sexually. In the second part of the article, I discuss the intersection of affect and sex as presented in Butt through the juxtaposition of Eve Sedgwick’s affect theory and Sigmund Freud’s theory of the drives. In so doing, I specify the ways it is possible – and not – to distinguish between drives and affects. This dialogue between competing theories helps us to grasp Butt’s culture of affective sexualities
