Attrition—A Perplexing Clinical Problem

Artention is drawn to the problem of attrition, variously referred to as the drop-out rate, the difference between stayers and terminators in therapy. Attrition has been shown to vary from 40% to 80% (1, 2, 3) berween application and termination of therapy. Generalizations of the effectiveness of psychotherapy have failed to acknowledge the often extreme amount of selection operating at various junctures between application and treatment (or follow-up).
