Aggravation, Mitigation and the Gender of Probation Officers

There is a considerable amount of research on the differential processing and sentencing of women offenders in the criminal justice system. There is considerably less on the influence on women practitioners at all stages of the process. This article examines the assessment of crime seriousness by probation officers and in particular questions whether gender has an influence on that decision
