Even though most statistical maps emphasize surface elevation, trend direction and gradient are important facets of statistical surfaces. Trend direction might play an important role in visual judgments of cross-correlation, particularly insofar as the cosine of the angle between the trend directions of two uniform, planar distributions equals the bivariate correlation. For distributions without simple, uniform slopes, the detection and symbolization of local trends can be an important objective of the map author. A spectrum describing the emphasis that might be given the portrayal of local trends indicates that the representation of geographic trends generally is not graphically compatible with the representation of surface elevation
