Nonlinear Reprojection T O Reduce the Congestion of Symbols on Thematic Maps

Limitations on a map's size might cause the congestion of symbols for parts of a region with high densities of mappable features. Common solutions to this problem are inset maps, cartograms, and non-uniform generalization. Clutter can also be reduced by reprojecting the base map so that scale is increased for more detailed areas and decreased elsewhere. Nonlinear reprojection can be specified by a continuous or hinged mathematical transformation applied to the rotated coordinates of a digitized base map. Examples of this type of reprojection and a test of subjects' abilities to recognize compressed shapes suggest that reprojection can be a useful means of minimizing the congestion of symbols on a map.Les limites de taille d'une carte peuvent causer un encombrement de symboles pour les parties d'une region dont les caracteres cartographiables sont fort nombreux. La solution habituelle a ces problemes est de construire un carton, des cartogrammes ou une carte realisee par generalisation non uniforme. L'encombrement peut egalement etre reduit en reprojetant la carte de base de telle sorte que l'echelle soit grandement augmentee pour les regions plus detaillees, mais decrue pour les autres regions. La reprojection non lineaire peut etre precisee par une transformation mathematique continue, ou pivotee, appliquee aux coordonnees alternees de la carte de base numerique. Des exemples de ce genre de reprojection et un essai des aptitudes des sujets a reconnaitre les formes compressees suggerent que la reprojection peut etre un moyen utile de minimiser l'encombrement des symboles dans une carte
