Le Bwiti chez les Nkomi

Bwiti, the most prominent of cultual associations (the socalled «secret societies») for males in Gabon, is widely popular in most parts of the country. However, the coastal Myéné group is still thought to be uninterested in the Bwiti. The southern portion of this group, the Nkomi, an «ethnic group» or «tribe» of the Fernan-Vaz lagoon, was studied in 1972 by the author, in order to define their degree of interest in the Bwiti. In the first part of this paper, it is shown that the Nkomi are generally rather insensitive to the Bwiti. This is partly related to a rivalry with Elombo, a «therapeutic» cult and a Nkomi creation of the 1930s. The second part is devoted to the study of ancient Nkomi cults and associations. Until the 19th century, there was probably an association, Okuyi, assuring the transition from childhood to manhood for tribesmen, parallel to Ndjembe, the feminine association still flourishing today. Besides, the term ombwiri, now reserved to some therapeutic cults of the Myéné, probably had a wider meaning in the past, including a classic aspect of ancestors' cult, fairly comparable to the supposedly primary form of Mitsogo's Bwiti. Some Nkomi people, by the end of the 19th century, were attracted by the Bwiti as a means of gaining personal power in a society disrupted by colonization. However, the Bwiti has rather a bad reputation among the Nkomi, being associated with sorcery, and its achievements today cannot be compared with the success of Ndjembe
