When I was first asked to write a paper on I would describe as an ideal graduate training program, I quickly replied in the affirmative never realizing its production would be such an emotional and difficult process. After making several attempts to get started, I realized that, although I frequently give presentations and am asked the same question, I had never set these thoughts down in writing. My main hesitation came from putting on paper ideas, values, and practices that have often been misunderstood and labeled as bizarre, odd, and superstitious. I also dislike being in a position where there is any chance that my statements will be categorized as what all Indians think. However, after many months of soul-searching, I have put together I, one person, speaking only for myself, feel would be at least the start of an ideal graduate training program. My perspective comes from working for over ten years in the mental health field, with various Indian populations from Hawaii to the Midwest, from completing a standard clinical training program in psychology, and from experiences with my own tribe. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the following people for their valuable help: Drs. Addison W. Somerville, Eric Trupin, Ron Jamalka, Steve Silver, Tom Holm, Herb Cross, Ann P. Streissguth, Ms. Alicia Ellis, Frank Montour, my sister, Gretchen, and, especially, Dr. William Willard. The start of an ideal graduate program in a mental health program for American Indians
