This article explains what the metropolitan areas of the United States must do to remain competitive and sustainable in the new economy created by globalization and technological innovations. The technological innovations include: promotion of knowledge based industries; offering of technologically advanced multimodal transportation networks; help in the creation of information and telecommunication networks; development of human resources that support knowledge based industries; and, offering of conditions that make for an attractive and sustainable quality of life
