The «plebs» of Minas Gerais, in the second half of the century, include blacks and metis, slaves and Freedmen, born in Brazil or in Africa. The study of wills permits to restore all the complexity of this colonial society in which, unlike what a partly false and stereotyped vision states, opportunities towards integration and social promotion were not rare. Slaves and Freedmen were, in spite of what has been said until today, the independent and creative actors of their own history
