Ideophones are very common in Creoles and even Indo-European languages, but there are very few (or no) studies describing them in these languages. However, they are widely studied in African and Asian languages. Ideophones are words that are semantically motivated in the way they signify their referents based on sensory imagery. They are very recurrent in Haitian Creole where they can play various syntactic roles: predicative nucleus, noun, adjective, adverb. Their recurrence in Haitian Creole may be a legacy of West African languages which have exerted substrate influences on the Haitian Creole
