Objetivo/contexto: This article examines landscape formation and the relationships between humans and the environment. It specifically focuses on the creation of quilombos (also known as palenques in other parts of the Americas) and landscapes in the Vale da Estrela, located in the western part of Guanabara Bay in Recôncavo do Rio de Janeiro. It explores the interactions among geographical, historical, ecological, cultural, and economic factors that shaped this area throughout the nineteenth century. With an environment composed of hills, mountains, and mangroves, the region became a strategic refuge for Black populations, especially during epidemics in the latter half of the period analyzed, enabling them to establish communities more protected from external threats. The study also highlights the emergence of new ecosystems, such as oil palm plantations, and investigates livelihood strategies and trade networks. Metodología: The research uses a multidisciplinary approach, combining historical documents, maps, toponymy, field studies, and geoprocessing analysis, along with a method called archival amplification to integrate data from various sources, enriching the analysis and providing a more comprehensive view of how these settlements developed and were organized. Originalidad: The research offers a new interpretation of quilombos, viewing them not only as sites of resistance but also as structures that combine territorial, social, and ecological aspects. Conclusión: The analysis shows how the valley’s natural features, such as its topography and vegetation, supported the settlement of diasporic populations, underscoring the importance of environmental resources for the resilience of maroon communities. However, the construction of the Barão de Mauá railway in the nineteenth century caused river sedimentation in the area, altering the landscape and hindering the preservation of memories associated with these groups. The research also highlights these human communities’ intention to shape lands, landscapes, and environments
